Run-Off

Strategic Advice

EMB are one of the most active firms in the run-off industry. We have provided actuarial commutation and reserving advice to run-off companies for decades and more recently have been at the forefront of developing sophisticated tools which consider the full range of possible outcomes including setting of regulatory capital and assessing risk premiums on transfers.

In addition to run-off companies our clients also include:

  • Live companies that have discontinued portfolios or units/divisions that are in run-off
  • Companies that are seeking to acquire run-off companies or books of business.

Increasingly, we are working with our overseas partners to share our run-off skills worldwide.

Our run-off services are overseen by Directors Paul Murray, Jonathan Broughton and Steve Mathews. They each have significant experience in the run-off sector and are supported by one of the largest and most experienced teams of run-off actuaries in the market and our Business Consultancy colleagues.  Given that run-off often emerges from a business re-engineering process, we possess a wide range of skills to complement all forms of run-off arrangements and transactions.

Capital Modelling

Starting in 2004 with the FSA’s introduction of ICAS it has been becoming ever more obvious that all insurance and reinsurance companies need to understand not only their best estimate liabilities but also extreme adverse scenarios too; since this is the basis on which regulatory capital is set. More

Exit Strategies Requireing Court Approval

EMB Partners and Directors have been heavily involved in exit strategies involving court approval processes. These include insolvent and solvent schemes of arrangement and insurance business transfers (Part VII transfers in the UK). More

Litigation Support & Expert Witness

EMB has provided litigation support for clients representing insureds, insurers and reinsurers. More

Portfolio Acquisition

We have extensive experience of working with clients looking to acquire run-off portfolios. More

Portfolio Disposal

In addition to acquisition, we also have extensive experience of working with clients who are seeking to dispose of run-off portfolios.  Our approach is to customise our services to meet our client’s requirements and the specifics of the assignment. More

Strategy

When a company enters run-off there are a number of strategic options available.  These options can include conventional run-off, commutation, scheme, sale, reinsurance to close, portfolio (Part VII) transfers and/or various combinations thereof.  More

Valuing Complex Liabilities

Run-off liabilities are often a mix of conventional liabilities and more complex long tail liabilities.  The conventional liabilities can often be reliably assessed using standard reserving techniques.  More
