Peter Matthews receives ARC Award for Services to Legacy Business

4 November 2008 - The Association of Run-Off Companies selected Peter Matthews, a consultant partner with EMB Consultancy, to receive its 2008 Award for Services to Legacy Business at its recent annual members’ dinner.

The Association’s only individual award recognises market practitioners who have had a major positive influence on the legacy sector.
 
Peter Matthews has devoted his career to the London Market and the international reinsurance industry since 1981. He established his own actuarial firm, Matthews Consultants, in 1987, which subsequently merged with English Wright & Brockman in 1997 to form English Matthews Brockman, now known as EMB.   In the early 80’s Peter was one of the first actuaries to encompass the financial exit route of mass commutations to mitigate reinsurance exposures and was influential in the early development of solvent and insolvent schemes of arrangement.  He has since become one of the respected adjudicators in the scheme movement.

The judges noted: “For more than twenty years Peter has championed the legacy sector and its interests and has, through his professionalism and integrity, been one of its most respected ambassadors ... the list of his involvements in solvent and insolvent run-offs reads like a ‘Who’s Who?’  of the legacy world.”

“I am still in a state of utter astonishment at being honoured with the ARC lifetime award,” Peter commented. “I would particularly like to thank the market colleagues who have supported me over the years and my work colleagues who nominated me for the award.  This is an immense award and one I will treasure forever.” 

Peter is still working with EMB and is active adjudicating market disputes and assisting with expert testimony.  Recently he has been appointed an arbitrator in a large market dispute.
