Mike Brockman, one of the founder partners of EMB, has been recognised with the Lifetime Achievement Award presented at this year’s General Insurance Researching Organisation (GIRO) Convention held in Sorrento.
Mike is the eighth recipient of the annual award which recognises significant contributions to general insurance practice. He said he was “absolutely gobsmacked and extremely proud” to have been singled out by his actuarial colleagues in the general insurance market.
Having started as an actuarial trainee in a Life Insurance Company in 1979, he moved into General Insurance during 1980, His entrepreneurial spirit led him to form EMB with colleague Andrew English in 1993. The consultancy, which has pioneered many new actuarial techniques, now employs more than 300 people around the globe covering Americas, Asia-Pacific and Europe, Middle East and Africa and clients include 28 of the top 30 non-life companies in the world.
Known as a Personal Lines specialist, Mike is also a regular speaker at seminars and conferences, both in the UK and overseas. He has written many articles and published papers on the subject of motor insurance and other insurance related topics. He has also been instrumental in several high profile industry initiatives including all four of the IUA/ABI UK Bodily Injury Awards studies.
“The award came as an immense surprise as I have always had a tendency to challenge current actuarial thinking,” said Mike Brockman. “One thing I have always been is extremely passionate and enthusiastic about General Insurance and I guess this is what has come through to my colleagues.”
